Financial assistance, which is often given based on need or merit, is money that students may use to pay for education.

Your or your family’s showed capacity to pay for college is taken into account when calculating need-based help to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. At the University of Utah, first-year students typically received need-based scholarships or grants worth $2,832.

In addition, 42% of first-year students in the autumn of 2023 received financial help based on need. Federal loans and work-study programs are two examples of need-based self-help aid. The typical first-year student received $2,376 in need-based self-help aid.

Non-need-based aid, also known as merit-based aid, is given in recognition of a student’s aptitude or academic success.

University of Utah Tuition Loan

Alternative student loans are sums of money that are funded by the private sector and are not part of the government’s program for student loans.

These loans, which are provided by banks, credit unions, and other lending organizations, are intended to augment government help when it does not meet students’ financial requirements.

Every private loan provider establishes its own terms—including the need for a co-signer—interest rates, fees, and restrictions for the loans they offer. All private loans require a credit check to determine eligibility.

When all other forms of federal financial aid have been exhausted and they have submitted the FAFSA, we advise students to only use these loans as a last resort.

University of Utah Tuition Scholarship

A student must confirm that they are an American citizen or a foreign national who is legally living in the country in order to be eligible for a scholarship, per state law.

If a student is unsure of their legal immigration status to the United States, they should consult an immigration counsel before completing a scholarship application.

The University of Utah is obligated by law to check with the Department of Homeland Security on the scholarship recipient’s citizenship or status as a lawful permanent resident before awarding any awards.

If DHS receives a student’s information from the University for verification, they may legally permit this federal agency to share it with other governmental organizations.

University of Utah Tuition Grant

In contrast to loans, need-based federal Pell Grants do not require repayment as long as they uphold eligibility. Only undergraduate students without a bachelor’s or professional degree are eligible for Pell Grants. EFC (from the FAFSA), Cost of Attendance (COA), and semesters of attendance are used to calculating awards.

Undergraduates with extraordinary financial need, or those with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC), are eligible for a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), which gives Federal Pell Grant recipients preference.

Similar to the Federal Pell Grant, an FSEOG is not repaid as long as they uphold eligibility. Awards range in size depending on funding, with $500 awards per term being permitted for 2023–2023.

Undergraduate Utah residents with extreme financial need and educational disadvantage are eligible for the Utah Education Fund Grant. To qualify for the UEF Grant, they must enrol you for at least 6 hours per week (half-time status).

As long as you continue to qualify for the money you received, a UEF Grant is not required to be repaid. Awards range in size based on financing, with $500 awards each term being permitted for 2023–2023.

The TEACH “Grant” program offers undergraduate (first bachelor’s degree) and graduate students up to $4,000 in “grant” help annually. Graduate students may receive a maximum of $8,000, and eligible undergraduate students may receive a maximum of $16,000 in TEACH “Grants.”

University of Utah Tuition Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study Program’s aim is to encourage students who financially need to work part-time jobs at higher education institutions so they can pay for their education.

The program promotes employment relating to a student’s course of study and community service. Simply put, it is a lucrative part-time employment prospect for students.

You are eligible to look for an FWS job if they give you Federal Work-Study (FWS) as part of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) award offers.

If they do not include FWS in your award offers, you can request consideration using our Federal Work-Study Request form.

The University of Utah makes no assurances regarding the acceptance or employment of all applicants because of the limited number of FWS funds available.

Federal Work-Study is not a grant or scholarship. The sum displayed is the most you can make working in an FWS position for the entire year.

You must have a position that is eligible for FWS in order to use these monies. Employment is not a certainty under federal work-study. The department’s or agency’s employment and application procedures still apply to students.
