The gap between the amount a student’s family is expected to contribute per year and the annual cost of attending Tufts (which includes books, personal expenditures, and transportation to campus), is known as demonstrated need.

Our study of the financial resources indicated by families on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), CSS Profile, and federal tax returns is used to evaluate financial needs.

Financial aid packages typically include grants, student loans, and funding for work-study. The typical financial aid package for students with families earning less than $60,000 annually excludes student loans.

Grants are sums of money that are not repaid. The majority of undergraduates at Tufts obtain their award funding from Tufts grants.

Grants from Tufts range in value from $1,000 to more than $75,000 Institutional Tufts fellowships are awarded to about 40% of undergraduate students at Tufts.

Additionally, Tufts students are given financial aid through state and federal initiatives including the SEOG and Federal Pell Grant, as well as through ROTC scholarships and a range of private funding sources.

TUFTS Tuition Loan

Financial aid packages normally do not include student loans for students whose families earn less than $60,000. In certain situations, Tufts will use grant aid and work-study monies exclusively to provide 100% of the stated need.

All other recipients of financial aid will also receive student loans as a component of their aid package. First-year domestic students frequently receive a $3,500 Federal Direct Loan with a subsidy.

Additionally, Tufts provides select undergraduate aid recipients with a need-based “Tufts Loan” of $500 to $2,000 every year. Repayment for both loan types begins six months after Tufts graduation and neither loan has interest applied while the student is enrolled.

While the national average for colleges is about 10%, the default rate for student loan payments among Tufts graduates is approximately 1.5%.

In addition, Tufts runs the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), which provides graduates working in the nonprofit and public sectors with financial aid for repaying student loans taken out to fund their Tufts education.

TUFTS Tuition Work Study

Financial aid recipients often receive a work-study allocation, with typical amounts ranging from $2,000 to $2,600 per year.

Students who participate in work-study programs get direct payments that they can put toward their living expenses while attending Tufts.

Students can search for open opportunities via the Handshake database of the Career Center at the beginning of the academic year that meets their interests and schedule.

First-year students frequently work 5 to 10 hours a week for pay ranging from $12.75 to $15.

Even if they are not eligible for financial aid, students can still look for non-work study jobs on campus and in the neighborhood.

TUFTS Tuition Scholarship

Tufts distributes financial aid based on need; aid is not modified for exceptional academic achievement or extracurricular involvement. Only the Tufts National Merit Scholarship program offers help based on merit.

Finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program are eligible to win a prize from Tufts University, a corporate sponsor of the NMSC, or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

No student may win more than one kind of National Merit award; the NMSC will choose the kind and value of the student award. A Tufts National Merit Scholarship recipient will receive $500 every semester for up to eight semesters of tuition.

Tufts University allows students to use Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC scholarships. Through courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tufts students take to engage in the ROTC.

Scholarships may provide money for college expenses as well as, in certain situations, monthly stipends.

There are full-tuition and partial scholarships available for four years. Contact a recruitment officer in the Army, Navy, or Air Force for more information and application materials.

Any outside scholarships that enrolled students receive need to be reported to the Financial Aid office.

If a student receives a scholarship from a third party, the money will initially be used to reduce or even eliminate the work-study and/or student loan elements of their financial aid package.
