Repayment on Direct Loans starts six months after a student drops below half-time enrollment or leaves school. Direct Loan restrictions differ by academic level (undergraduate and graduate).
The maximum amount of Direct Loans that students may borrow falls within each “class” level.
Only undergraduate students are eligible for Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans, which are based on their financial need and do not collect interest as long as they are enrolled at least half-time (6 credits for undergraduate students).
The maximum amount of Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans that a student may get is their cost of attendance, less any additional financial aid that has been given. After the initial installment, the unsubsidized loan starts to accrue interest.
