Each campus’ financial aid offices are staffed with qualified personnel who manage these programs and provide guidance to students and families on the financial assistance and scholarship opportunities available to them across the UH System.

Start by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid provided by the U.S. Department of Education (FAFSA).

University of Hawaii Tuition Loan

Federal Loans are loans taken out to pay for college or technical training. Your loans must be repaid with interest.

The U.S. Department of Education typically pays the interest while the student is in school and during certain other periods for undergraduate students who have the financial need; They must enrol student at least half-time.

For loans that are disbursed for the first time on or after July 1, 2023, but before July 1, 2023, they fix the interest rate at 4.53% for the duration of the loan.

The U.S. Department of Education may stop paying interest if a student who got Direct Subsidized Loans for the maximum duration of time discontinues participation.

Borrowers may not receive this form of a loan for over 150 percent of the length of their program of study.

Undergraduate and graduate professional students may apply for a direct unsubsidized loan; they must be enrolled at least half-time; financial need is not a requirement.

For loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2023, but before July 1, 2023, the interest rate is 4.53% (undergraduate) and 6.08% (graduate or professional), fixed for the life of the loan.

University of Hawaii Tuition Grant

Grants are financial aid that doesn’t require repayment.

A student enrolling in a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program may also be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant if they have financial need and are an undergraduate without a bachelor’s or professional degree.

Federal Pell Grants are only available to students for a maximum of 12 semesters, or the equivalent (roughly 6 years).

Federally funded additional educational opportunities (FSEOG) Federal Pell Grant recipients are given preference for undergraduates with the greatest financial need; funding is subject to availability at the institution.
