Penn State offers you the following choices, depending on whether you want to take summer classes at University Park or would want to take a shorter introduction course for fall credit:

Learning Edge Academic Program (LEAP)

LEAP is available to first-year students in the summer session and is a great introduction to Penn State.

Students with a fall offer of admission to University Park may participate in LEAP but need to accept their offer and then contact our office to change their acceptance from fall to summer.

Admission Requirements

The following charts outline the minimum high school requirements for admission into Penn State’s academic colleges or the Division of Undergraduate Studies.

Subject

Minimum Units Required for:

English 4 units, including 1 unit each in composition and literature
Social Studies/Art/Humanities 3 units in any combination of social studies, arts, or humanities
Science 3 units
Math 3 units in algebra (algebra 1 and algebra 2, at minimum) and geometry
World Language 2 units

Additional Information for Applicants with a GED

Official high school transcripts up to the latest year you finished and an official GED transcript are required if you did not graduate from high school but did acquire a GED.

To be considered official, all high school and GED transcripts must be provided from the high school (or GED testing site) directly to Penn State.

Through the department of education in the state where the GED was earned, students can obtain their official GED.

Steps to Apply by Applicant Type

Follow these steps to complete your Penn State application.

The first step to applying is to decide what type of applicant you are. Select the applicant type that best describes you from the list below.

1. First-Year Students

You are a first-year student if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is currently in high school or has completed fewer than 18 college credits.

2. International Students

You are an International Student if you require any type of visa to attend Penn State. This includes students living inside and outside the United States.

3. Transfer Students

You are a Transfer Student if you have attempted or completed 18 or more credits at another college or university after high school graduation.

4. Adult Students

Adult Students are over age 24, veterans or active-duty members of the U.S. military, or are more than four years out of high school.

5. Military & Veteran Students

You are a military and veteran student if you are a veteran or active duty member of the U.S. armed forces.

6. Undocumented Students

Penn State welcomes the application and enrollment of Undocumented Students with or without DACA.

Undocumented students and DACA recipients can find a safe environment and supportive community at Penn State.

How do I check my Penn State application status?

You can always check the status of your application in MyPennState. We will communicate with you via MyPennState and through a series of emails regarding your offer of admission.

What time does Penn State release decisions?

Those students who submit a complete application, including a Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR), by November 1 will have the best chance of admission to their first-choice campus and/or major and will receive an admission decision no later than December 24.

When did Penn State release decisions?

Dec. 24, 2023: Early Action applicants will receive their decision (admit, defer, deny) Early February 2023: Early awarding of student aid begins for applicants in Early Action. May 1, 2023: National Decision Day (enrollment deposits are due)
