We give you the chance to improve your child’s academic performance for the Grade R Admission in the comfort of your own home. You can make sure that your child has one-on-one interaction with you for every lesson, giving them the individualized care and love that only a parent can give!
The enrollment period for your child in a school must be between August 1 and October 31 of the previous year. A grade R applicant must be four years old and turning five by June 30 of the following year, and a grade one applicant must be five years old and turning six by June 30 of the following year.
You have the option of enrolling your child in either a public or private school. While they run privately independent schools, the state manages public schools. Independent schools need to register with their respective provincial departments of education.
The MEC is responsible for creating public schools in the province.
No public school may treat your child unfairly, demand that they take an entrance exam, or keep them from attending because you have not paid the required tuition or are unable to do so.

Grade R Admission / Registration Procedure
Apply a year before at a school near you or a school of your choice (between 1 August and 31 October).
To register the following documents are compulsory:
- Application form from the school
- Official birth certificate
- Immunization card
- If you are moving your child from one school to another, submit the latest school report, and a transfer card.
If your child is not a South African citizen, include the following documents:
- study permit
- temporary or permanent residence permit or proof that you have applied for permission to stay in South Africa.
School Fees
School fees vary from school to school. If you cannot afford to pay, you must make arrangements with the school. Although a school cannot refuse a learner’s admission, they can take legal action against you for failure to pay any outstanding school fees.

Grade R Admission 2024
Parents who wish to apply for the 2024 school year as a late application must please contact the district office. Parents must make sure that a request for their child has been registered on the WCED system.
In order to secure and provide places to parents when places have become available, officials use the list of students who still require a place to follow up with and interact with schools and parents. Here is how it works:
Schools review their lists and make further offers to parents depending on available spaces.
The 9 Admission Teams take over the process and place learners at schools where spaces are available.
By the conclusion of the school year, schools won’t be able to finalize their admissions until they’ve finished the promotion and progression procedure, which will determine whether there are any additional openings in each grade. But we’re committed to making sure that every student is placed before then.
