The History of Fairmont

In January 1977, Fairmont, then known as The Eversdal English Medium School, first welcomed students. Mr. Clive Wigg served as the first principal. At the outset, he had 330 students and 17 teachers on staff.

The top floor remained empty in the first year since the three-story structure was considered too large for the first intake of students. The hall was still being built, there were no athletic fields, and there was no memorial quad.

The students lacked the required uniform. The school changed its name to Fairmont High School at the conclusion of the first academic year.

The school was then furnished with a single field, a grass wicket in the middle, two tennis courts, two netball courts, two cricket nets, and so on. The students proudly wore their brown uniforms, which stood out from all the nearby schools.

The school’s motto, “Stand Fast,” was presented by Mr. Wigg’s wife, Mrs. Lynn Wigg, and adopted by the school community. Mr. Wigg authored the lyrics to the school song.
