1. The University of Cape Town

The University of Cape Town (UCT), which is situated in Cape Town in the Western Cape region of South Africa, was established in 1829 as a college before evolving into a full-fledged university over the course of a year.

A public research university, UCT takes pride in being the second-oldest university still in existence in Africa and the oldest in South Africa.

Basic Application Requirements

Depending on the degree of study an applicant is applying for, UTC’s admission standards for 2024 vary.

Bachelor’s Degree Study

To be eligible to apply for bachelor’s degree programs, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Applicants with non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate
  2. Applicants with a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.
  3. Applicants with a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) must pass a minimum of 4 subjects at a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better from a designated list of subjects to be eligible to apply. The list of subjects include

Undergraduate Diploma Study

To be eligible to enroll in undergraduate diploma programs, applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC), which Umalusi has certified, with an accomplishment rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in 4 approved NSC 20-credit subjects.

Application Open Date: 1st May.

Closing Dates

  • Undergraduate: 31 August 2024
  • For applicants finishing secondary school in 2024, all grade 12 interim results or predicted scores in the case of non-NSC candidates: 31 October 2024
  • Interim and past transcripts for transferring applicants: 31 October 2024
  • National Student Funding Assistance Scheme (NSFAS) funding application: 30 November 2024

Postgraduate applications are still being accepted, however, deadlines can be verified with the appropriate faculty office.

2. University Of Pretoria

Over a century has passed since the University of Pretoria was founded. It is a top-tier institution that houses the sole veterinary school in South Africa and the second-oldest veterinary school in Africa (founded in 1920).

There are nine faculties and a business school inside the university.

Basic General Application Requirements

Candidates must meet the minimum requirements for degree studies, in addition to the minimal requirements for the appropriate program, in order to be eligible to apply for admission to the University of Pretoria.

An applicant’s performance in any SIX approved NSC 20-credit subjects is used to calculate their Admission Point Score (APS) using the NSC seven-point scoring system.

Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject that cannot be included in the APS calculation.

The seven-point rating scale for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) that the institution accepts is listed below.
