UVA is regarded as a Public Ivy, or a public university that provides a learning environment akin to that of an Ivy League university.

James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe—the president of the United States at the time of its founding—made up the initial Board of Visitors, which served as the organisation’s governing body.

Jefferson and Madison, earlier presidents, served as UVA’s first two rectors. Thomas Jefferson created the first academic programs and buildings.
