Financial aid is offered even though SUNY’s tuition is already reasonable in comparison to other universities. And it comes in a variety of shapes according to need or merit.

Scholarships, grants, federal work-study, the New York Tuition Assistance Program, the SUNY Tuition Credit, State University Student Aid, veteran’s benefits, federal direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans, federal direct PLUS loans, and alternative loans are all available at SUNY.

Most students utilize a combination of these sorts of aid to pay for college; some of it has repayment requirements, while others of it don’t.

Examine the scholarships available at each SUNY college listed here. Scholarships are essentially unpaid financial aid; they do not require repayment.

We advise you to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible in October of the year prior to your fall enrollment because student financial need is occasionally a criterion or factor in eligibility.

A tailored search, like FastWeb, that contrasts your past with a database of rewards is one of the finest ways to look for scholarships.

Your school counselor and FinAid are other resources. Keep in mind that you should never be required to pay to look for scholarships.

SUNY Tuition Grant

Grants are frequently given out based on financial necessity and typically don’t require repayment or work.

Undergraduate students with financial needs are eligible for Pell Grants. The maximum Pell Award for 2021–22 is $6,895 annually.

The neediest students are eligible for Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), which are a complement to Pell Scholarships.

This program offers financial aid of up to $4,000. At SUNY, the typical reward is in the neighborhood of $1,000 a year.

SUNY Tuition Loan

Federal direct loans are guaranteed, long-term, low-interest loans granted to students by the institution and supported directly through the government.

With the FAFSA, your family must demonstrate financial need in order to qualify for a subsidized loan.

A first-year student’s borrowing cap is $3,500. There is a 1.057% origination fee for loans. The interest rate is 4.99% for 2022–2023.

When a student drops below a half-time load or leaves school, principal, and interest are due. (There may be additional funding made available without subsidies.) The loan is not based on necessity.

For first-year students, the total combined Stafford Loan amount (unsubsidized and subsidized) is $5,500. There is a 1.057% origination fee for loans.

The terms of the unsubsidized loan are the same as those of the subsidized loan with the difference that interest (4.99%) is charged on the loan while the borrower is still enrolled in school.

Interest may be paid while the borrower is enrolled in school or added to the debt, as agreed upon by the lender and borrower. This choice raises borrowing’s overall cost.

SUNY Tuition Work Study

By merging federal and campus funding and awarding grants based on financial need, the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program offers employment opportunities.
