Cost of Attendance (COA), commonly known as a student budget, is a projection of the typical educational expenses a student can face while enrolled (semester or year).

The COA makes allowances for the cost of books and supplies, transportation, meals, lodging, and personal expenses in addition to the estimated tuition and fee amounts.

The total COA represents the total amount of financial aid, including student loans, that a student may receive during that enrollment term.

Certain COA elements differ amongst students. They consist of:

  • where a student resides (whether it’s on campus, off campus, or at home with a parent or relative)
  • The course of study for the student. Different colleges or majors charge various tuition fees.
  • Estimates of the cost of attendance based on the number of hours enrolled are only used to determine financial aid.
