About the Zoo

Before being released, a group of about 1,000 birds that had been brought from Europe in 1872 was held at Burnet Woods.
They established the Zoological Society of Cincinnati in 1873 because of discussions among Society of Acclimatization members about the possibility of opening a zoo.
The following year, the Cincinnati Zoological Society gained a 99-year lease on 65 acres (26 ha) of the Blakely Woods cattle pasture.
On September 18, 1875, the Cincinnati Zoological Gardens entered. The earliest finished zoological displays in the United States were created by architect James W. McLaughlin, who also built the zoo’s original buildings.
Eight monkeys, two grizzly bears, three white-tailed deer, six raccoons, two elk, a buffalo, a tiger, an American alligator, a circus elephant, and over 400 birds, including a talking crow, were among the zoo’s first inhabitants.
Cincinnati Zoo Admissions Opening Times
The Cincinnati Zoo opens each day at 10 am, although the time it closes varies.
The zoo shuts at 5 p.m. from 13 March to 31 October, at 9 p.m. when Festival of Lights is in effect from 20 November to 9 January, then at 5 p.m. once again from 10 January to 12 March.
