As the third phase of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) approaches its conclusion, participants in the program will be weighing up their options as they consider the next step in their journeys.
Some of the youth employed as teaching assistants and general school assistants have enjoyed their experiences in the classroom and are now considering becoming teachers. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is encouraging these participants to apply for the Funza Lushaka bursary.
The DBE explained that one of the key objectives of the BEEI was to provide exit pathways for young people. The department added that many of the youth have expressed interest in studying teaching and the Funza Lushaka bursary will be an ideal option for the participants.
The Funza Lushaka Bursary covers most of the beneficiary’s essential expenses including tuition fees, accommodation, meals, books and learning materials, teaching practice and if possible a small allowance for monthly living expenses. The bursary recipient does not have to pay back the money to Funza Lushaka.
Who Can Apply For The Funza Lushaka Bursary?
- Any academically exceptional student who is 30 years old or younger can apply for the bursary
- You need to be studying or wish to study a Bachelor of Education (BEd) or a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) at a public university.
- Have at least a level 4 pass at matric level in the subject which leads on to the priority area/subject in which the applicant will specialise to teach.
- For participants wanting Foundation Phase specialisation, a pass in Mathematics or a level 4 pass in Mathematical Literacy the Grade 12 level is required. In addition, a level 4 pass in the Home Language is required.
- Students who wish to specialise in the teaching of Technology subjects, including CAT. and who do not have these subjects at matric level, must have at least a level 4 pass in Mathematics.
- Academic record with two (2) Technical Subjects/modules studied up to second-year level showing a full completion of the qualification.
