The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that Phase 3 of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) will conclude at the end of August 2024. The initiative created around 280 000 employment opportunities for young people in South Africa.
Phase III terminated on 31 August 2024 with no further extension and DBE values the contributions of all participants in PYEI, officials, assistants, schools and businesses
As part of the PYEI, the education department received a budget allocation of R13 billion to create jobs in the education sector. Their employment programme, named the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) saw youth employed at schools in their communities as general school assistants.
Many of the youth who were employed under the BEEI, benefited from the initiative for at least two of the three phases. However, the DBE said these youth would not be considered for phase 4 of the programme.
They explained that the programme was introduced to give young people work experience and equip them with the relevant skills in preparation for the world of work.
By restricting applications to individuals who were not previously part of the programme, the DBE will be able to provide this opportunity to more young people.
The DBE said, “The significant achievement of the PYEI helps in addressing the triple challenge of inequality among the genders, unemployment and poverty. As a government, we urge youth to continue to grab the upskilling opportunities that are available”.
The department thanked youth, schools, communities, partners and provincial education departments for their contributions in ensuring the success of the employment initiative.
