While there are currently more applications than available positions, the DBE is concerned that some schools have not received any applications. Applications for the teacher assistants jobs opened on 26 September 2024 and will close on 16 October 2024. This means applicants have just over a week to apply for Education Assistant (EA’s) and General Assistants (GA’s) positions at schools across the country.

Youth between the ages of 18 and 34 will be able to register on the online recruitment system for the positions. The website is free to use and does not require any data.

The DBE has also called on members of the public to report any suspicious activity related to the intiative.

“Communities are also reminded that this is a FREE opportunity and no one should pay to access the Assistants (Education and General School Assistants) job opportunities and are requested to report such illegal activities” explained the DBE.

Members of the public can report any illegal activities related to the teaching assistant jobs via email to or or on the presidential hotline at Or Public Service Commission at .

The implementation of the PYEI cost the DBE R25,5 billion over four financial years. The PYEI in the education sector is called the Basic Education Employment Invite (BEEI) which in its entirety, aims to create 1 million job opportunities for youth.
