About SANRAL

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd, or SANRAL, is a South African parastatal in charge of managing, maintaining, and developing South Africa’s proclaimed National Road network, which includes numerous National and some Provincial and Regional route parts.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited and the National Roads Act, 1998 established SANRAL as a corporatized successor to the South African Roads Board, which was part of the Department of Transport. On May 19, 1998, it was incorporated as a public limited corporation.

In 2011, SANRAL became the subject of popular animosity as tolling was set to begin on many of SANRAL’s Gauteng motorways in order to finance their soon-to-be-completed upgrades as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project’s first phase. The GFIP was established to alleviate traffic congestion on Gauteng’s motorways.
