The Bureau Economic Research (BER) Programme 2024 is an Economist Internship that provides practical training to appropriately qualified previously disadvantaged individuals. The programme equips trainees to function as economists in the private and/or the public sector.

The one-year programme affords candidates the opportunity to work alongside BER economists to gain experience in all aspects of business-oriented economic analysis.

Since the inception of the programme in 2006, the BER has trained many economists, pursuing careers at South Africa’s leading financial institutions, the South African Reserve Bank, the National Treasury, and other leading research institutes.

Employment Opportunity

The successful candidates will be employed by the South African Reserve Bank, but will spend the first year of employment in training at the BER. The recruits will receive a competitive salary, even during the internship year at the BER.

Criteria for the Bureau for Economic Research Programme 2024 Applicants

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Hold an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics (by January 2024) with Macro-economics as a subject at the post-graduate level
  • Be fluent in English
  • Possess excellent communication and writing skills

Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to psychometric assessments, an appropriate reference check, and security clearance as part of the selection process. Suitable candidates will be selected based on the Bank’s commitment to diversify its workforce.

Relevant Dates for the Bureau for Economic Research Programme

Recruitment will take place during May and June 2024 and interviews will be held during July and August. The internship will start in January 2024 and end in December 2024.

On the window that opens, you will need to fill out the Internship Application.

  • You will be asked to upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV) (2 MB maximum, PDF or Word documents only)
  • Next on the list is your contact details. Comprising your Title, First name, Last name, Email, Primary telephone number, and Additional telephone number. You will also be asked to select your Race,
  • Criteria are next on the list. You will have to tick the two boxes asking if you are South African and if you will hold an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics by January 2024 (with Macroeconomics as a subject at a post-graduate level)
  • Next is Education. You’ll have to fill in the blanks with your University, Highest current degree and if you have others you will have to specify. You will also be asked to attach full academic records for your tertiary qualifications (2 MB maximum, PDF or Word documents only).
  • Finally, you will be asked for some additional information. You will be asked if you have completed (or are currently enrolled in) an internship/trainee programme. If you tick the ”yes” box, you will be asked to provide details of the programme and also explain why you are the best candidate for the internship.
  • Carefully review your internship application form. If you are satisfied with your answers, click ”Register”.
