Students who meet the requirements and are enrolled at least half-time in an authorized degree program are eligible for federal direct loans (1.75 units per term).

Apply for financial aid via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the relevant academic year.

Students who can prove they qualify for need-based financial aid are given federal direct-subsidized loans.

When the student is enrolled at least half-time, the federal government pays the interest that accumulates on Federal Direct Subsidized Loans; payments are not due until six months following graduation, removal from school, or decrease to less than half-time status.

Students who cannot prove they are eligible for need-based aid may apply for federal direct unsubsidized loans.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans do incur interest while the student is enrolled. Repayment of the principal plus interest starts six months after graduation, dropping below a half-time load, or leaving school.

(If the student chooses to do so, accrued interest may be paid at the time of enrolling.)

University of Richmond Tuition Student Employment

The two primary student work programs provided by the institution are the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program and the University Work Program (UWP).

The primary contrast between the two is that FWS is partially funded by federal dollars; students who are eligible and receive these funds are granted an FWS award as part of their aid package by the Office of Financial Aid.

You are eligible to apply for FWS positions if you have received federal work-study grants. Students who have received FWS funding are also eligible to apply for UWP positions, but only for positions that bear the UWP designation.

Earning FWS dollars is advantageous. This is because the pay you get via the FWS program will lower your Adjusted Gross Income in subsequent aid years. If you don’t use the entire quantity of the supplied FWS, there are no consequences.
