Undergraduate students can apply for need-based Direct Subsidized Loans.

The US Department of Education pays the interest while you are enrolled at least half-time, for the first six months after you graduate (often known as the grace period), and when you are on deferral.

Payments are automatically suspended when you attend school at least half-time.

Borrowers in the undergraduate category are eligible for the interest subsidy for up to 150% of the program’s stated duration (6 years for most students at the University of Portland; this varies by program and student type).

Undergraduate and graduate students can apply for Direct Unsubsidized Loans, which are not based on need.

The interest shall be payable by you (the Borrower) beginning on the date of disbursement, including during any period of deferment, grace period, or enrollment in school.

Payments are automatically postponed when you are enrolled at least half-time in school, but interest is still accrued on the remaining loan balance.
