The Illinois Supreme Court created the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar (Board) with the primary aim of conducting the Illinois Bar Exam.

The Board is also in charge of collecting fees, granting applications on motion, and awarding licenses to attorneys taking part in legal help programs, house counsel, and foreign legal advisors.

The Guidelines for Illinois Bar Admissions

1. Print and read the detailed Instructions for Admission to the General Bar found on the Northern District of Illinois website. Click on Illinois Bar Admissions to print and read.

2. Download the General Bar Petition in PDF format, which is fillable. Click here to download the Petition to your computer. Click Save a Copy once the petition has been opened.

3. Complete the petition and the oath of office. Delete all signatures from lines.

4. Print the completed forms.

5. Petition for Admission to the General Bar must be signed and date.

6. Fill out the Oath of Office and date it.

7. They must complete an affidavit of Sponsor, signed, and date by your sponsors. (Important: Make sure your Sponsors’ dates of admission to a state bar are included.)

8. Get an official letter of good standing. Please refer to the instructions for the Admission of the General Bar for vital information regarding the Letter of Good Standing.

9. Scan the petition, the letter of good standing, the sponsors’ affidavits, and the oath of office into a single PDF document.

10. After completing, signing, and scanning the Petition for Admission to the General Bar, you can register for the General Bar, upload your petition to the court’s website, and electronically pay the filing fee ($188.00) through the pay.gov system.

Illinois Bar Admissions Exam Date 

The Illinois Bar Exam is a two-day exam:

  • Day 1 comprises six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions and two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test questions(MPT) MPT in the AM while MEE in the PM.
  • Day 2: The 200-question Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), which is a multiple-choice exam (100 questions in the AM, 100 questions in the PM).

Result Release Dates for the Illinois Bar Admissions

The Illinois Board of Admissions typically makes the February bar exam results public to the Bar in early April and the July results in early October.

Application Deadline

Applications must be electronically submitted by September 15 for the February exam and by February 15 for the July exam.
