The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has officially announced that applications for new teacher assistants will open on 26 September 2024 and will close on 16 October 2024. This means applicants will have just three weeks to submit applications to start working in 2024.

The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) sought to create employment opportunities for young people within various government departments. The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) formed part of the DBE’s contribution to the PYEI.

The DBE said a six-week pre-application period will open on 5 September 2024 to allow youth to ensure they have all the relevant documentation needed when applying. The pre-application period will close on 16 October 2024.

Youth between the ages of 18 and 34 will be able to register on the SAYouth.mobi online recruitment system for the positions. The website is free to use and does not require any data.

The SAYouth.mobi system can reduce bias, subjectivity and non-compliance to the requirements of the employment initiative.

Currently, the BEEI is in its third phase which saw around 280 000 youth placed in schools as teacher assistants and general school assistants. This phase will conclude at the end of August 2024.

The DBE said that youth who were previously part of the BEEI will not be eligible to work in the fourth phase of the programme. This will allow youth who did not previously benefit from the programme the opportunity at employment.

The Presidency, DBE and Provincial Education Departments have extended their gratitude to all the youth who assisted schools since the programme began in 2024. They have encouraged them to continue using the skills, competencies and knowledge they gained during their time as part of the employment initiative in their future endeavours. .
