A Short Summary of Federal Grants

How do grants work? The government can fund your ideas and initiatives through grants in order to deliver public services and boost the economy.

Grants fund numerous programs included in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, including vital recovery activities, ground-breaking research, and others (CFDA).

One of the numerous types of financial aid provided by the federal government is a grant. The term “federal financial aid” is used broadly to describe the numerous methods the United States government transfers funds to qualified beneficiaries.

You can apply for grants and cooperative agreements from federal agencies that offer grants on Grants.gov.

The Grant Lifecycle

A grant’s lifecycle is linear and consists of four steps: establishing the funding opportunity, accepting applications, deciding whether to grant the grant and effectively administering the grant.

For information on what the applicant and the grant-making organization do during the lifespan, visit the Grant Lifecycle page.

Three major stages are used to organize specific actions throughout the lifespan. A page dedicated to each of the three steps offers a more thorough look at the procedure:

  1. Pre-Award Phase – Funding Opportunities and Application Review
  2. Award Phase – Award Decisions and Notifications
  3. Post Award – Implementation, Reporting, and Closeout

Who is Eligible for Government Grants?

It’s crucial to know if you qualify to apply for and get a federal grant. You would spend a lot of time and money filling out the application if you are not legally qualified for a certain financing opportunity since then you would not be able to obtain the award.

The first step in determining eligibility is to determine what kind of organization you represent (or whether you are applying as an individual).

You are prepared to examine your eligibility if you have decided whether to apply on behalf of your company or as an individual.

Generally, a wide range of organizations are qualified to apply for grants posted on Grants.gov. Each type of organization that is described in the categories below corresponds to a certain search need in Search Grants.

Also welcome are applications from individuals!

How Do You Know if You Qualify for Government Grants?

You must:

  • already get a disability grant, war veteran’s grant, or grant for older persons
  • not be able to look after yourself owing to your physical or mental disability, and therefore need full-time care from someone else
  • not be cared for in an institution that receives a subsidy from the government for your care or housing.

How Will You be Paid?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will pay you the grant via one of the following methods:

  • cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
  • electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
  • an institution acting as administrator of the grant (e.g. welfare organization).

Your social grant and the grant will both be paid. You can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office or grant someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself.

When Might Your Grant be Reviewed?

Your grant may be reviewed when the social grant to which it is attached is reviewed.

What You Should Do

1. Go to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office nearest to where you live and bring the following:

    • your 13-digit bar-coded identity document (ID)
    • proof of your marital status and spouse’s identity where applicable
    • medical report or assessment report (less than three months old) that shows that you need full-time care.

Note: A family member or friend may submit your application on your behalf if you are too frail or ill to get to the office. The individual should obtain a letter from you and/or a note from your doctor explaining your inability to visit the office.

2. Fill out the application while the SASSA officer is present (note that only you as the beneficiary or a SASSA official may complete the application form). After speaking with you, the officer will determine if you are eligible for the grant.

3. A receipt will be provided to you. Maintain it as evidence that you applied.
