The third phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) in Basic Education concluded at the end of August 2024. The programme proved 850,000 job opportunities for youth over its three phases.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) said that most of the youth have been paid their stipends for August, however, some youth are yet to be paid. They said the various provincial education departments are working to ensure all youth are paid what is owed to them.
“Where unpaid stipends are identified, the delays are due to the finalisation of the validation and verification processes to ensure there is no under or over-allocation of funds to the schools” explained the DBE.
The department said schools were required to provide relevant documentation to prove to the provincial education departments that all the funds they receive correspond with the number of youth appointed at their schools.
During the initiative, youth were encouraged to participate in skills training courses which were offered by the University of Johannesburg (UJ), NEMISA, Digitfy Africa and 2Enable.
They believe that if youth completed the courses, along with the work experience they received, they enjoy better prospects in the South African labour market.
The DBE called on the youth to continue using the opportunities that are available on the SAYouth.mobi platform which includes learning and entrepreneurship provided by the DBE’s private partners.
While the youth who participated in the initiative received a stipend, they were compelled to make contributions to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). The DBE says this will allow youth to receive some financial support if they are unemployed.
“Applications for unemployment benefits must be made in the prescribed form at an employment office. The application must be made within six months of the termination of the contract of employment” explained the DBE.
The DBE thanked all youth for their service at schools around the country and wished them in all their future endeavors.
