We are examining how testing affects WashU’s capacity to predict student performance, but students who are unable to submit their SAT or ACT scores or who choose not to will have the requirement for standardized testing removed.

Applicants will have the chance to conduct extra alternative testing regardless of their response (such as AP exam results, subject tests, or national exams).

In addition, we will no longer take demonstrated interest into account when deciding who gets admitted. Additionally, we are extending the test-optional rule for candidates until 2024.

Admission Requirements

We take seriously your request to be admitted to Washington University. Each application is carefully reviewed and scored by our admissions committee.

Whether applying as a first-year or transfer student, admission to WashU is tough and selective.

Most Candidates’ Transcripts include:

1. 4 years of English

2. 3-4 years of laboratory science (engineering recommends chemistry and physics)

3. 4 years of mathematics (architecture, business, and engineering strongly recommend calculus)

4. 3-4 years of history or social science

5. At least 2 years of the same foreign language since the ninth grade

The College of Arts & Sciences recommends both chemistry and physics for students who plan to do coursework in pre-medicine or the natural sciences.

Other Important Parts of Your Application:

1. Grades and class rank (if your school ranks students)

2. Counselor recommendation and one teacher evaluation.

3. Students who elect or are unable to provide SAT or ACT scores are encouraged to provide a teacher evaluation from a teacher in their area of academic interest who can address academic readiness in the area.

4. A 200-word response to the question “Please tell us what you are interested in studying at college and why.”

5. Extracurricular and community activities

6. The common application or coalition application essay

7. Optional – Standardized test scores.

8. Either SAT or ACT, writing is not required.

9. Test results from any of your high school years are acceptable.

We consider only the highest individual scores, whenever they occurred.

The last test date accepted will be the December testing (October if applying Early Decision I).

A portfolio is required for applicants to the College of Art. Portfolios are strongly encouraged for the College of Architecture.

What GPA do You Need for Washington University in St. Louis?

To have the best shot of getting in, you should aim for the 75th percentile, with a 1570 SAT or a 35 ACT. You should also have a 4.15 GPA or higher.

If your GPA is lower than this, you need to compensate with a higher SAT/ACT score.

Is WashU Hard to get into?

WashU admissions are very selective with an acceptance rate of 16%. Students that get into WashU have an average SAT score between 1480-1560 or an average ACT score of 33-35.

The regular admissions application deadline for WashU is January 4.

Is Washington University in St. Louis Rolling Admissions?

Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis and typically take four to six weeks. Applicants are encouraged to submit all materials by the following dates: Fall Enrollment: August 5.
