Public historically Black institution Jackson State University (often known as Jackson State or JSU) is located in Jackson, Mississippi. It is one of the biggest HBCUs in the US and, in terms of student enrolment, the fourth largest university in Mississippi.
The institution belongs to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and is categorized as one of the “R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity” institutions.
The Tigers, an NCAA Division I team representing Jackson State University, are a part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Sonic Boom of the South, a marching band established in the 1940s, is also housed at the campus.
The Prancing J-Settes, their partnering dance line, are highly recognized for their distinctive J-Setting dance form.

In order to help students successfully transition into the institution, our team in Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment is dedicated to supporting prospective students and their families throughout the acceptance and enrollment process by offering crucial information.
Freshman: You have never attended a college or university, or you attended a college or university for the first time in the prior summer term.
Transfer: You are entering JSU for the first time, but previously attended another postsecondary institution.
Readmit: You previously attended JSU, but did not attend during the previous fall or spring semester.

Priority Deadlines: Traditional Students

Step 1; Visit Campus

A quick introductory session and a 112-hour walking tour make up your visit. Staff from the recruitment office and student ambassadors lead tours.
Prospective students and guests can learn about the requirements for undergraduate admission, available degrees, housing options, student life, and the history of the university during our tour.
You’ll catch a glimpse of some iconic campus structures, such as the JSU Student Center, housing options, the recreation center, and the library.
Step 2: Get Admitted to JSU
GET ADMITTED TO JSU
Applying to Jackson State University takes three (3) easy steps:
- Submit an online application at www.jsums.edu by clicking the “Apply” link on the homepage.
- Request your high school to send an official transcript to Undergraduate Admissions.
- Request official ACT or SAT scores be sent to Undergraduate Admissions. We suggest these scores come directly from ACT or SAT. Jackson State University’s college code for ACT is 2204 and the college code for SAT is 1341.
Please allow 4 – 6 weeks from the receipt of all required documents for an admission decision.

- The preferred method is directly from ACT or SAT. JSU’s code for ACT is 2204 and the code for SAT is 1341.
- A pdf version is acceptable through mail or by emailing transcripts@jsums.edu.
ACT scores printed on the transcript are NOT considered official. Please submit an official copy.

Official Transcript
The official transcript may be:
- Sent electronically via Parchment web account or Clearinghouse (email for clearinghouse is transcripts@jsums.edu). If sending via any other method, please call 1-866-THEEJSU (866-843-3578) for further instructions.
- Mailed in school envelope.
- Hand-delivered in a sealed envelope.
- Emailed directly from the high school counselor or another school administrator from the school email address (send to transcripts@jsums.edu)
