UWC has a noteworthy past. Its employees and students bravely opposed apartheid in South Africa, winning independence and ending segregation.
They established the institution in 1959 as a school for black students intending to prepare teachers and government officials to serve as leaders in a distinct black community. However, most of the university’s staff members and rector were white.
The university changed through years of resistance, and in 1975 it appointed a black rector. He promoted more open dialogue and thought. 12 years before the government would eventually put a stop to the system, in 1982 the institution formally opposed apartheid.
