Government To Assist Young People Seeking Job Experience

Various government departments are doing their part to curb youth unemployment in the country. Here is how the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs plans to respond to the same issue through its 2024 budget vote.

Young people have been exposed to opportunities that have given them actual experience as part of supporting functional municipalities, says Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

The Minister stated this during a National Assembly mini-plenary on Tuesday when she presented the department’s budget vote.

A total of 50 civil engineers, 15 electric engineers, 15 town planners, and nine assistant provincial managers from the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) were deployed to various provinces across the country as part of the municipal support and intervention package during the previous financial year.

Dlamini-Zuma further stated that these specialists are assisting with a variety of infrastructure projects, and they are backed up by the 519 municipal officials who received infrastructure management training from the MISA during the last financial year.

Technical skills, apprenticeships, learnerships, graduate programmes, and bursaries were provided to 382 young people.

This is complemented by assisting 100 young graduates in practical experience so that they may complete their professional registration process. This is our contribution toward functional municipalities that promote the growth of our local economies

The Minister also pointed out that through the R50 million granted by the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), MISA has also trained 2800 municipal officials in labour-intensive construction procedures, thus providing further support to local economies.

The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Ministry has also allocated R157 million from the Municipal Disaster Relief Grant to address natural disasters.
