Number of Candidates That Rewrites Matric Rewrites in 2024
With thousands of candidates now sitting down to write their May/June Matric exams, which include Matric rewrites, this year’s numbers are said to be lower than previous years. The May/June exam season commenced on 26 May.
May/June Matric exams commenced on 26 May and are set to come to an end on 7 July.
These exams are for those who are doing Matric rewrites due to being unsuccessful in their end-of-year Matric exams or having been unsatisfied with the results they have obtained. The Department has these exams fall under the Second Chance Matric Programme.
The Director of the Second Chance Matric Programme, Sandy Malapile, said that this year’s May/June exams has fewer candidates than there were in previous years due to last year’s combined exams.
Around 300 000 candidates are writing in this May/June exam season with Malapile saying, “The Department is ready to administer the full standard Covid operating protocols”.
When you achieve a Matric qualification, opportunities will open. You then apply to the institution of higher learning. You qualify for NSFAS. You qualify for Funza Lushaka. Your life is transformed and changed.
The Department of Basic Education has support programmes in place to assist these candidates which is done through the Second Chance Matric programme. This is done through four platforms:
- Online support where you can access and download study guides and past papers
- Video and audio material
- Broadcasting programmes on SABC 1, Mindset (Channel 319 on DSTV), Channel 201 on Open View and radio stations
- Face-to-face classes conducted in 113 centres throughout South Africa
- Hardcopy revision material

This May/June exam period will see individuals write to gain their National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Senior Certificate (SC).
Malapile went on to say, “We want to take the opportunity to wish all our learners, and of course our teachers, the best examination”.
