Elizabeth first met Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1934, and they reconnected in 1937. They were third cousins through Queen Victoria and second cousins once removed through King Christian IX of Denmark.

Elizabeth, who was just 13 years old when they met for the third time at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in July 1939, claimed she fell in love with Philip, who was 18, and the two started writing one other letter.

She was 21 when their engagement was officially announced on 9 July 1947. There was substantial debate surrounding the engagement. Charles was Elizabeth’s first child, born on November 14, 1948. Princess Anne, her second child, was born on August 15, 1950.
