1. University of Cape Town
South Africa’s highest-ranked entry in the new QS University Rankings: The University of Cape Town (UCT) is ranked eleventh among BRICS institutions. They found UCT in 1829 and are South Africa’s oldest university.
It has a beautiful campus on the slopes of Table Mountain’s Devil’s Peak in the Western Cape Province. The University of Cape Town, a public research university, has five Nobel Laureates among its alumni and was the site of the world’s first heart transplant.
In the BRICS ranking, UCT performs well in many of the eight assessment indicators. In QS’s global academic survey, it ranks 10th among BRICS universities, and it performs particularly well for international faculty and international students.

2. Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch University is the next South African entry in the BRICS ranking. It is a public research university in Stellenbosch, nicknamed the “City of Oaks” because of the large number of oak trees planted by its founder in 1679.
Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa, and its university dates back to 1863. Besides its main campus in Stellenbosch, the university has facilities in Tygerberg (in Cape Town’s northern suburbs), Bellville Park (on the city’s eastern outskirts), and Saldanha (a bay area north of Cape Town).
Departments of Commerce, Science, Arts, and the Military join the prestigious Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University. In the QS University Rankings: BRICS, they rank Stellenbosch University 30th overall.
3. The University of the Witwatersrand
The University of the Witwatersrand, another multi-campus university, is in the northern and central areas of Johannesburg, South Africa’s wealthiest province and one of the world’s 50 largest metropolitan areas.
It is the third oldest South African university in operation, as well as the third highest South African entry in the QS University Rankings: BRICS, trailing only Stellenbosch University at 31.
Wits University has five campuses, two urban and three suburbans, that house nearly 28,000 students and 3,200 faculty members. It ranks highly for the international diversity of its faculty, ranking fifth among BRICS universities in this category.

4. The University of Pretoria
The University of Pretoria, founded in 1908, is now a multi-campus university and one of South Africa’s largest, with academic programs taught in both English and Afrikaans.
With its main campus in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative and de facto capital, the University of Pretoria ranks 43 in the BRICS ranking and is the only South African entry in the ‘XL’ category, with over 45,000 students (extra large).
The university is home to South Africa’s only veterinary school, which is also Africa’s second oldest. Education, economic and management sciences, engineering, health sciences, humanities, law and theology, and business at the Gordon Institute of Business Science are among its nine faculties.
5. University of KwaZulu-Natal
The merger of the Universities of Natal and Durban-Westville formed the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Its five campuses are all in the Zulu-speaking province of KwaZulu-Natal, also known as the “garden province.”
The university is made up of four colleges, which are further subdivided into several schools that cover a wide range of subject areas. In collaboration with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, it has also recently opened the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV.

6. The University of Johannesburg
The University of Johannesburg, ranked 61, is a relatively new university that was formed in 2005 because of a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR), and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University.
The University of Johannesburg is now one of South Africa’s largest comprehensive contact universities, with four urban campuses, nine faculties, over 90 departments, and an annual enrolment of nearly 50,000 students.
The University of Johannesburg forewent creating a coat of arms and motto in order to distinguish itself from its predecessors and establish a reputation as a new, adaptable, and progressive institution (customary for universities in South Africa).
7. Rhodes University
Rhodes University is the oldest of the four universities in the Eastern Cape Province, in Grahamstown. It is a public research university with over 7,000 students enrolled each year, making it the only South African university classified as small in the QS University Rankings: BRICS.
Just under half of the students live on campus, giving them access to Grahamstown’s many arts and culture offerings, as well as the city’s two largest annual festivals, the National Arts Festival in January and the popular SciFest Africa in the first term of the academic year.
8. The University of the Western Cape
Finally, the University of the Western Cape is in Cape Town, South Africa’s southernmost city, in the Bellville suburb. Despite apartheid legislation that ended only in 1994, the university has always been an integrated and multiracial institution since its inception in 1959.
