Towson University Admissions Requirement

Admission to Towson University is required for students who want to study in Special Education, Early Childhood/Special Education (ECSE), or Elementary Education/Special Education (EESE).

However, enrollment in the Special Education, Integrated EESE, or ECSE programs does not ensure enrollment at the institution. Students will be given a Special Education adviser once they submit a Declaration of Intended Major Form, which is available online through the Registrar’s Office.

A Criminal History Disclosure Form must be filled out by all applicants to Towson University’s Teacher Education programs.

Screening

A screened major is special education. According to the cumulative GPA in all college or university courses (transfer GPA and/or TU GPA), all candidates for the Special Education, Integrated Elementary Education Special Education, and Integrated Early Childhood Special Education majors will be ranked.

An online application must be submitted in order to be taken into consideration for admission to a special education program.

Students must meet the following requirements:

  1. GPA of 3.0 or higher
  2. possess a C or higher in all required coursework when transferring; no course lower than a 2.0 will transfer
  3. completion of 60 or more units (including units in progress)

All pre-service students in Towson University’s Teacher Education programs who are required by their course of study to do an intense and prolonged internship in a public or private school environment must first submit to a criminal background check.

The Department of Special Education must get a criminal history check.

Transfer Students

Personnel in the Special Education Department are receptive to transfer students and will review any credits that might be compatible with the requirements for the Core Curriculum, the Special Education, Early Childhood/Special Education, and Elementary Education/Special Education majors, as well as state certification.

Admissions and the program adviser will decide which courses will satisfy program requirements once you’ve been accepted to the university.  The program adviser should be contacted for further details by transfer students.

The Professional Year

Students majoring in special education adhere to the academic calendar of the Professional Development School where they are placed as interns.

The professional year begins in August when the school year for teachers begins, and it is timed to coincide with spring break for the educational system.
