In many ways and frequently, Woodward Academy has always been a school ahead of its time while also being a school of its time.
Atlanta’s population was 89,872 in 1900. Three years prior to Orville and Wilbur Wright’s historic flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, there had not yet been a silent movie, World Series, or Nobel Prize.
Colonel John Charles Woodward was a young Georgia educator who received his master’s degree from the University of Chicago. He eagerly returned to his home country to implement his educational principles.
He and his wife Lucile settled in College Park to build Georgia Military Academy. A school where students would develop the qualities—of service to others.
Also solid moral foundation, accountability, and problem-solving—would change their lives and the world around them.
The Academy continues to embrace Col. Woodward’s beliefs and to interpret them in ways that are pertinent to today’s students and the problems of our times, surviving and even thriving through two worldwide pandemics, a Great Depression, and two world wars.
Careful, active citizens flourish in Woodward. It’s a place where kids learn to be compassionate, kind, self-assured, tenacious, and resilient.

Woodward may not have predicted the educational advancements of the digital age.
But he would still be proud of the institution he founded given the difficulties and successes that students face today, the committed teachers who support them, and the thousands of alumni who have made a positive impact on society.
The Founder
Dr. Ebenezer and Mary Greenleaf Woodward established The Woodward School. That is in 1869 to provide a school for females to prepare them for further study.
John Adams’ cousin and primary care physician, Dr. Ebenezer Woodward, was a renowned and well-liked doctor. He worked in Quincy for close to 50 years. He was also a founding father and the second president of our country.
John Adams established a trust before his passing in 1826 for what would eventually become the boys’ Adam’s School.
