About the University

Virginia’s Fairfax County is home to the public research university George Mason University. They initially established the institution in 1949 as the University of Virginia’s northern branch.

They gave it the George Mason name in 1959 and converted to an independent university in 1972.

Admission Process

George Mason University admission is selective and determined by several criteria. To be considered alongside other qualified applicants, each applicant who applies for admission must show acceptable qualifications.

A student may only accept an admission offer for the semester for which they applied. Programs with a small enrollment or unique needs might employ a second review procedure.

Early Admission

High school juniors who have finished all requirements for high school graduation, except for senior English and government courses, may apply for admission and enter the university as degree-seeking students one year early, with the approval of their high school counselor or principal (demonstrated through a letter of recommendation).

Candidates must have outstanding grades, SAT or ACT scores, and a high school curriculum that shows a rigorous academic preparation for work at the university level.

Competitive individuals pursued the most challenging curriculum offered at their school (i.e. AP/IB/Honors level coursework). Candidates must also submit their junior year of first semester grades.

General Admission Requirements

Combined high school grade point average (GPA) for work done in grades 9 through 12, as well as difficulty of the courses chosen, notably in major academic courses.

Request an official transcript from your high school to be sent.

SAT and ACT Scores

You can choose to apply Score Optional or to include your ACT or SAT scores with your application.

George Mason University will use the self-reported SAT and/or ACT test scores as part of our all-inclusive admissions process if you choose to apply with those scores.

However, a decision on admission will only be made once the university has received official test results that have been delivered directly from the testing organization and are received prior to the start of the semester in which the applicant plans to enroll.

Upon receiving official test results, the Office of Admissions may review a candidate’s admissions or scholarship decision. A change in the status of admissions or scholarships may result from this reevaluation.

Report from the secondary school and advice from the counselor.

Two (2) letters of recommendation, one from your high school guidance counselor and one from a teacher, are what we advise sending.

Common Application

The Common Application provides a section for uploading letters of recommendation. For George Mason University’s Undergraduate Application for Admission, there is no special recommendation form and they can submit letters electronically or via e-mail to admissions@gmu.edu. (If you have been out of school for over five years, this is unnecessary.)

250 words or fewer, optional but highly recommended, in which you tell the admissions office why YOU want to attend college.

Tell us a little about yourself and the experiences that influenced your choice. When invited to do so during the Common App’s online application process or elsewhere, submit your statement online.

The University has an English competence criterion that non-native English speakers must meet.

The criteria are satisfied by applicants who will have finished four years (grades 9–12) of college-preparatory English at a U.S. secondary school, excluding Puerto Rico, with grades of C or better in each course (excluding ESL and remedial English courses).
