The Bottomless Lake
The lake is located in Ipesi, which is in Akoko South-East. It’s about 115km from Akure – the capital of Ondo State. The lake is about 1.6km long and about 40m wide, it has a fascinating history, according to the locals of this town. The word “Ebomi” is an adulteration of a Yoruba word known as “Abami”.
This lake is situated in the pristine forests of Ipesi-Akokp enclave. The marvelous waters of Ebomi Lake flows gracefully below the dense canopies of the forests.
The lake which is located in Ipesi-Akoko, is also known as “the bottomless lake” because of the depth that is difficult to estimate. This late stretches through a distance of about 2km and it’s about 45m wide, with thick forest canopies surrounding it.
According to oral history, the people of Ipesi Akoko met the Ebomi lake in Ipesi. Because they couldn’t find the appropriate words to describe their curiosity about the features of the lake, they decided to call this strange wide body of water “Abami” which means “mysterious”. This name changed to Ebomi after a while, this name has remained as Ebomi till date.
The lake, according to the inhabitants of Ipesi Akoko, has supernatural powers for protecting the villagers during times of war. The lake is believed to have unseen shoulders that fight battles for the Ipesi people. They said that the lake has the powers to give the villagers different gifts like children, fishes, fowls and many more gifts.
