This page sets the minimum academic requirements for admission into study programmes at Sol Plaatje University in 2023. The requirements are based on the results that applicants achieve in the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. Applicants who hold certificates from a different examination system will be considered individually for admission.
SPU’S ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCE PROGRAMMES
1. BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (GENERIC) – B.COM.
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme
- NSC pass with Bachelor’s Degree requirement
- English LOLT or HL: NSC Level 4; OR English 1st Additional Language: NSC Level 5
- Mathematics: NSC Level 4 (Mathematical Literacy is not )
- A National Certificate Vocational with relevant subjects will be considered for entry into this
- APS: Minimum 30 point
2. DIPLOMA IN RETAIL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme *
- NSC pass with Diploma Requirement
- English HL: NSC Level 4; or English 1st additional language: NSC Level 5
- Mathematics: NSC Level 3 OR Mathematical Literacy: NSC Level 5
- At least one of the following at NSC Level 4: Accounting, Business Studies or Economics
- APS: Minimum 25 points
SPU’S HUMANITIES PROGRAMMES
1. BACHELOR OF ARTS (B.A.)
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme
- NSC pass with Bachelor’s Degree requirement
- English LOLT or HL: NSC Level 4; OR English 1st Additional Language: NSC Level 5
- Mathematics: (NSC Level 2) OR
Mathematical Literacy: (NSC Level 3) is required
- Minimum Admission Points Score (APS) of 30
- Additional subject requirements have been set for students wishing to enrol for a major or modules in Economics, Geography or Mathematics – a minimum achievement of Level 4.
- A National Certificate Vocational with relevant subjects or SPU’s Higher Certificate in Heritage Studies will be considered for entry into this Details will be provided by the Head: School of Humanities.
2. HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN HERITAGE STUDIES
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme *
- NSC pass with Certificate requirement
- English HL: NSC Level 4 OR
English 1st additional language: NSC Level 5
- Mathematics: (NSC Level 2) OR Mathematical Literacy: (NSC Level 3)
- APS: Minimum 25 points
SPU’S NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCE PROGRAMMES
1. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (B.Sc.) Period of study: 3 years
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme
- NSC pass with Bachelor’s Degree requirement
- English LOLT or HL: NSC Level 4; or English 1st language: NSC Level 5
- Mathematics: NSC Level 4 (Mathematical Literacy is not )
- Physical Sciences: NSC Level 4
- Life Sciences: NSC Level 4
- APS: Minimum 30 points
2. DIPLOMA IN INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) Specialising in Applications Development
Minimum requirements for admission
- NSC pass with Diploma requirement
- English HL: NSC Level 4 OR English 1st additional language: NSC Level 5
- Mathematics: NSC level 3 OR Mathematical Literacy: NSC Level 5
- APS: Minimum 25 points
It is highly recommended that applicants should also have Computer Applications Technology (CAT) or Information Technology (IT) as subjects in their Matric curriculum.
3. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN DATA SCIENCE
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme A National Senior Certificate as recognised by Umalusi with a minimum achievement of Level 5 for Mathematics; Level 4 for English LOLT/HL or Level 5 for English First Additional Language. Mathematical Literacy will not be accepted for admission to this programme.

- Mathematics: NSC Level 5 (Mathematical Literacy is not )
- APS: 30 points
SPU’S EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
1. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B.Ed.) INTERMEDIATE PHASE (Grades 4 – 6)
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme
- NSC pass with Bachelor’s Degree requirement
- English HL: NSC Level 4 OR English 1st additional language: NSC Level 5
- If Mathematics is an elective: NSC Level 4
- If Biology/Life or Physical Sciences is an elective: NSC Level 4
- APS: Minimum 30 points
These programmes target potential students who have successfully completed Grade 12 with admission to degree studies and who want to teach Languages, Mathematics, Natural Sciences or Languages, Life Skills and Social Sciences to Grade 4 – 7 learners.
2. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B.E) SENIOR PHASE (Grade 7 – 9) & FET PHASE (Grade 10 – 12)
Period of study: 4 years
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme
- NSC pass with Bachelor’s Degree requirement
- English HL: NSC Level 4 OR English 1st additional language: NSC Level 5
- If Mathematics is an elective: NSC Level 4
- If Life Sciences or Physical Sciences is an elective: NSC Level 4
- If Accounting is an elective: Accounting NSC Level 4
- APS: Minimum 30 points
This programme targets potential students who have successfully completed Grade 12 with admission to degree studies and who want to teach one or more of the following subjects at school: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences; Geography, Technology, Languages, History Accounting, Economics and Business Management.

SOL PLAATJE UNIVERSITY POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Postgraduate Diplomas Requirements
- An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
- Admission to the status of that degree OR
- Attained a level of competence
- Some Schools/College may accept and Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.
Duration
- A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.
Curriculum
- The curriculum will contain advanced reflection, practice and research methods in the area of specialization and may include a sustained research project in accordance with College rules approved by Senate.
Bachelor of Honours Degrees Requirements
- An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
- Admission to the status of that degree OR
- Attained a level of competence
Duration
- A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.
Curriculum: The curriculum for the Honours degree shall include a prescribed research project as one of the modules which shall account for a minimum of 25% of the credits for the degree. Masters by Coursework and Masters by Research Requirements

- Admission to the status of that degree OR
- Attained a level of competence
Duration Coursework
- A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
- With permission and in terms of College regulations, periods of attendance at the graduate level at another institution or in another College may be accepted. (Consult with relevant School).
Research
- A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
Research
- Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate program of research on a subject on a subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the University. Students must also adhere to possible other conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.
