How Do I Apply for Financial Aid?
To apply for financial aid, submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by following these steps:
- Create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID at fsaid.ed.gov. The FSA ID is a username and password combination that allows you to sign your FAFSA electronically. If you are a dependent student, you and your parent must each create a FSA ID.
- Complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.gov. If you do not have access to a computer, you may obtain a FAFSA from your high school guidance office or the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800-4FEDAID (800-433-3243).
- You must list our Rutgers University Federal school code 002629 on your FAFSA (online or paper) application before submitting it.
- Submit your FAFSA online or by mail. The earlier the U.S. Department of Education’s Central Processing System receives the application, the sooner the financial aid process can begin. The FAFSA becomes available October 1 of each calendar year. To receive maximum consideration for need-based or merit scholarships, we encourage incoming first-year and transfer students to file the FAFSA by December 1. If you submit the FAFSA by December 1, you should receive your online planning letter in mid-January. We strongly encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to submit the correct tax information on the FAFSA.

International Students: Please note that international students (F-1 or J-1 visa holders) are not eligible by law for Federal Student Aid.
