How Ancient Africans Communicated Over Long Distances In The Olden Days

Before the use of telephones, people had different means of communicating over long distances. There were means of communication that were developed by the people that lived in forest areas back then.

Due to the nature of their hollow environment and also due to the absence of heavy machines and vehicles, the sound of drums could travel very far. Drums were used as an effective way to communicate over long distances back then.

The types of drums that were used greatly depended on the region and culture of the people. The Wolof people of Senegal made use of the Tama drum, while the Yoruba people of Nigeria and the people of Easter Benin used the Gan Gan and Dun Dun drum respectively.

The Akans of Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire used the Dondo, while the people of northern Nigeria, Niger, Nothern Ghana, and Cameroon used the Kalangu drum. So there you have it, these are drums that were used for communication way back in the days of our forefathers.
