What is Open Distance Learning?
Open distance learning is a delivery method and pedagogical strategy that emphasizes greater access to education and training by removing obstacles brought on by location, pace, and time constraints.
Students may enroll in an open distance learning qualification, but they have a set minimum and maximum amount of time to complete it, using a set number of assessment opportunities.
The North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus is home to the Unit for Open Distance Learning. Currently, the Unit serves about 30 000 students, mostly from the Faculty of Education Sciences (teachers), but it also serves a lesser number of students from the Faculty of Arts, Theology, and Health Sciences (Nursing).
How are Classes Presented in Open Distance Learning?
Currently, 65 study centers in South Africa and Namibia offer contact classes for students taught by lecturers or facilitators or by interactive whiteboard sessions.
Operations and Administration; Study Centers; E-learning; Projects and Tender Management; Quality Management; and Finances make up the organizational structure of the Unit. Academic managers chosen for the Unit serve as the unit’s point of contact with faculty.
What Does the Future Hold for Open Distance Learning?
In order to create more ODL programs for delivery starting in 2024, the Unit for Open Distance Learning is developing cooperation with the following faculties: Economic and Management Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Law.
To ensure that all ODL students at the NWU have the best administrative support, the Unit for Open Distance Learning also works with administrative partners like the Open Learning Group, FET Colleges, and the Business School of Excellence in Namibia.
