The Department of Basic Education (DBE) revealed that more than 7,4 million applications are from youth who want to participate in phase 4 of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI). These applications were submitted from 867,864 unique applicants.
While there are currently more applications than available positions, the DBE is concerned that some schools have not received any applications. This, as 796 schools in the country received less than 20 applications while some schools in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape have not received any applications for teaching assistant positions.
Applications for the teacher assistants jobs opened on 26 September 2024 and will close on 16 October 2024. This means applicants have just over a week to apply for Education Assistant (EA’s) and General Assistants (GA’s) positions at schools across the country.
Youth between the ages of 18 and 34 will be able to register on the SAYouth.mobi online recruitment system for the positions. The website is free to use and does not require any data.
The DBE has also called on members of the public to report any suspicious activity related to the intiative.
“Communities are also reminded that this is a FREE opportunity and no one should pay to access the Assistants (Education and General School Assistants) job opportunities and are requested to report such illegal activities” explained the DBE.

The implementation of the PYEI cost the DBE R25,5 billion over four financial years. The PYEI in the education sector is called the Basic Education Employment Invite (BEEI) which in its entirety, aims to create 1 million job opportunities for youth.
