SASSA released a statement which read:

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is refuting social media misinformation and claims about the expiry of the SASSA-SAPO card on 31 March 2024These claims are not true.

They then went further and said in bold, “The SASSA Cards will NOT stop working on 31 March”.

SASSA cards will be replaced but there is currently no set date for when this must be done.

SASSA cards are issued to those beneficiaries who chose to receive their SASSA money through the Post Office. This card is then used to withdraw funds.

Beneficiaries are urged to not withdraw funds on the day they are made available and in the account. Funds will be able to be accessed during the month as well.

Currently, discussions are taking place with SAPO and Postbank to ensure that beneficiaries experience little to no disruption during the replacement of SASSA cards.

More details on the replacement of the SASSA card will be given in due course, said SASSA.

The public should note that the potentially compromised cards did not result in any beneficiary losing any money. Fraud, however, has been taking place due to poor implementation of controls in the management of cards within the post office and not due to the security of the card.

Even though SASSA is not the custodian of the cards, they plan to play their part in fighting crime and corruption.
