Did you know that WeThinkCode_ offers tuition-free education on coding?
South Africa has an intense shortage of digital skills with 40 000 entry-level software developer jobs open but not enough graduates to fill them. WeThinkCode_ wants to help fill these gaps and you could be part of the solution.
Nyari Samushonga, CEO of WeThinkCode_, sat down with Careers Portal to talk about coding, the importance of cultivating South Africa’s digital talent and tuition-free education.
Who are WeThinkCode_ & what do they offer?
WeThinkCode_ is a software development academy which recruits South African youth, between 17 and 35 years of age, to get to learn how to code. They aim to cultivate and create space for South Africa’s next generation of top tech talent.
WeThinkCode_ is tuition free and is accessible to everyone. 98% of WeThinkCode_ graduates end up with employment and are employed by the sponsors that pay for their training.
WeThinkCode_ now has campuses in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
How To Apply to WeThinkCode

- Do the online test
- If successful, you will then be selected for a bootcamp
You don’t have to have any prior coding experience to get educated with WeThinkCode_. Should you join them, you will be trained through bootcamps.
Bootcamps are a 6-day process which simulates the WeThinkCode_ environment where you’ll be introduced to coding concepts.
What being a student at WeThinkCode is like
Your first semester will be known as your ‘Fundamentals’ where you’ll learnt the core concepts of coding.
Samushonga says:
We keep all the jargon out so we work very hard to make sure the curriculum speaks to you in English and you can follow what’s going on.
The programme simulates a work environment which will see you get your readings through your student account and you will then be given problems to solve with code.
The work will get more and more heightened and you will then connect the dots and you’ll see yourself becoming qualified. Coding allows young Africans to work in any industry they want. Industry experts come and talk to students about the coding career path and show you how the things you learn are useful in the workplace.
Students receive deliverable and work alone for the first month and after that, they then work in groups. You also practice giving presentations and working in teams.
You could also be asked to build a booking or game from scratch, after you’ve gained the knowledge and skills to do that. Interactive would also be another word to describe student life at WeThinkCode
It’s learning through doing and learning through teaching.
During the course of the programme, students will also intern at a company to get the experience of what it is like to work in the real world.
