The Durban University of Technology, DUT, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates who are high school leavers, non-school leavers, and graduates from recognized institutions for admission into the various Postgraduate programs offered by the institution.

Application to the Durban University of Technology, DUT, is primarily done online, depending on your preference, by following the steps outlined below.

DUT Online Application Procedure

To become a student at the Durban University of Technology, you have to:

  • The applicant applies via the CAO.
  • Applications can be made via the Central Applications Office (CAO) at http://www.cao.ac.za/ or visit the CAO at Mary Thiphe Street (formerly corner of Francois and Cato Manor Roads), Cato Manor, Durban, Tel: (031) 268 4444 or Share Call: 086 0860 CAO / 086 0860 226, International dialing code for SA +27

Step 2

  • CAO captures the application form

Step 3

  • Academic Depts/ Admissions Dept make selections online and/or downloads the application from the CAO for specific programs.

Step 4

  • Student Admissions Dept conducts preselection online based on University & program specific requirements

  • Program requirements met.

Step 6

  • Applicants are invited for an entrance test/ interview, etc

Step 7

  • Applicants are ranked according to their achievement rating.

  • The minimum entrance requirements for admission to the DUT for a South African applicant are as below:

For Higher Certificate Programmes

a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English.

For Diploma Programs

a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English and a minimum achievement rating of 3 in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects.

For Bachelor’s Degree Programs

a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English and a minimum achievement rating of 4 in four NSC 20-credit subjects chosen from the NSC designated subject list.

Minimum Requirements For the Durban University of Technology for NCV Level 4 Applicants

For Higher Certificate

A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with at least 50% in English.

For Diploma:

A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with the following minimum requirements:

  1. At least 50% in three fundamental subjects including, English; and
  2. At least 60% in three compulsory vocational

For Bachelor’s Degree:

A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with the following minimum requirements:

  1. At least 60% in three fundamental subjects, including English; and
  2. At least 70% in four compulsory vocational subjects, chosen from the National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4

Over and above the minimum entrance requirements, each department also sets specific entrance requirements with which applicants need to comply.

  1. International applicants are required to check the International Brochure for detailed information on the admission process.
  2. Apply online at the Central Applications Office (CAO). (A prospective student who wishes to study at DUT must apply via the CAO by visiting their website at www.cao.ac.za)

Minimum First Registration Installment for 2024

First Installment (Non-Residence Students)

The following first installment is compulsory on the day of registration:

  • 1.3.1 Annual Students – Tuition Only: R 4 400.00.
  • 1.3.2 Semester Students – Tuition Only: R 2 700.00 (Note that this fee applies to those students who only need to register for one semester only, usually those with only one semester left to complete a qualification. Students who are taking a program with modules offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 in the same year will need to register for both semesters at the beginning of the year and will be charged the Annual First Installment namely R4 400.00)

First Installment (Residence Students)

The following first installment is compulsory on the day of registration:

  • 1.3.3 Annual Students – Tuition plus Residence: R 8 970.00
  • 1.3.4 Semester Students – Tuition plus Residence: R 5 500.00 (Note that this fee applies to those students who only need to register for one semester only,  usually those with only one semester left to complete a qualification. Students who are taking a program with modules offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 in the same year will need to register for both semesters at the beginning of the year and will be charged the Annual First Installment namely R8 970.00)

If you have not yet taken your final exam, please include certified copies of your Grade 12 diploma (June/Trial report) and your identity document while completing the CAO application online.

The completion of an application form does not guarantee acceptance as a student or your ability to register. Each candidate will receive a written or SMS notification of the results of their application.
