The southernmost institution of the University of Texas System is the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), a public research university with many campuses spread over the Texas area of the Rio Grande Valley.
Following the merger of the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas-Pan American, the Texas Legislature established the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in 2013.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley enrolled 29,619 students for the fall semester of 2023, making it the fourth-largest academic institution in the University of Texas system in terms of student enrolment and the ninth-largest university in the state of Texas overall.
89.2% of UTRGV’s students identify as Hispanic in 2018, making it one of the largest institutions in the US with a mostly Hispanic student body. Almost all of these students are Mexican Americans.
In 2023, it was categorized as belonging to “R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity.”

Requirement
Students at UTRGV are talented, kind, diligent, goal-oriented, and civic-minded. Therefore, we don’t just look at candidates’ test results and grade point averages. We approach admissions holistically to acquire a complete picture of each candidate and how they might affect the school community.
If you have graduated from high school or will soon graduate from high school and have not attended a college or university AFTER your high school graduation, you are an incoming freshman.
You are still regarded as an incoming freshman even if you have earned college credit while you are STILL in high school. As long as they haven’t gone to college or university after getting their diploma, GED and homeschool students are likewise regarded as a beginning freshmen.
Admission to UTRGV is guaranteed for high school graduates who place in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.
All UTRGV incoming freshmen applicants will have an individual admissions profile generated from all the information given, and admissions choices will be based on that profile and their high school achievements.

Documents Required to Complete Application:
- Fill out your UTRGV application online at https://goapplytexas.org/
- Domestic students should apply by submitting a “U.S. Freshman” application.
- International students must submit an “International Freshman” application (Note: A $50 application fee will apply).
- For the 2023-2024 application cycle, UTRGV remains test-optional. If you have taken the ACT or SAT exams and wish to send us your scores, contact the testing agency. The UTRGV school code for ACT is 6991, and for SAT 6568.
- While test scores are not required for an admission decision, test scores are required for Tuition Advantage and are highly encouraged for Scholarships, College of Engineering Admissions, Biomedical Program Admissions, etc.
- Submit your high school transcript or high school equivalency certificate. Make sure it indicates your graduation plan, class rank, class size, and GPA (If applicable).
- Admissions Essay A or B through Apply Texas.
- Although not required for admission, it is strongly recommended that applicants submit official college transcripts reflecting college coursework taken while in high school (dual enrollment) for consideration under Holistic Review.
