Tuition fee deposit

If you are a self-funded international student, you will need to pay a tuition fee deposit before we can issue your CAS number for your student visa application. Tuition fee deposit for 2023–22 is £1,500.

If you are starting a course with us in September 2023 you must provide us with your tuition fee deposit by 31 August 2023.

You can pay your tuition fee deposit online or by using the bank transfer service partnered with Western Union, which allows you to pay in your local currency.

You don’t need to pay the tuition fee deposit if:

  • you are fully sponsored by the UK government, your home government, the British Council or any international organisation, international company or university
  • you are in receipt of the Norwegian Lånekassen funding
  • you do not require Student visa sponsorship i.e. a CAS to study in the UK
  • you hold a full scholarship such as a Chevening or University of Brighton full fee scholarship
  • you are in receipt of a US Federal loan
  • you are a University of Brighton Pre-sessional student
  • you are a progressing University of Brighton International College student
  • you are a University of Brighton alumnus.

Tuition fee deposit refund policy

Once you have paid your tuition fee deposit, we will only issue a refund if your circumstances fall within our tuition fee deposit refund policy. The terms of the policy are detailed below:

Unconditional offer: Student visa students

  • Before CAS is assigned – if the university is unable to issue a CAS then the deposit will be refunded. If an option to defer is offered we will hold the deposit to use for the following year’s course of study. Any refund will be subject to a £100 administration fee.
  • After CAS is assigned and before application for visa (or application for visa is withdrawn before being decided) – the deposit is non-refundable unless severe, extenuating personal circumstances justify not taking up our offer. Students whose ability to take up study at Brighton is disrupted as a result of COVID-19 will have their deposits refunded in full – Please contact us if you are seeking a refund and outline details of your extenuating circumstances. A member of the international team will then contact you directly to request documentation. If there is the option to defer the student’s place, the university will hold the deposit to use for the following year’s course of study.
  • After CAS is assigned and Student visa obtained – the deposit is non-refundable. If the student does not use the visa to travel to the UK and defers their place we will hold the deposit to use for following year’s course of study.
  • After CAS is assigned and Student visa refused – the deposit is in most cases refundable unless there was a clear oversight in the student’s visa application as outlined in the UKVI reasons for refusal letter eg. the student’s application was refused for reasons of deception, false documents were submitted, or when the student applied despite the university’s advice to the contrary. The student must provide a clear and complete copy of the UKVI Refusal Notice which will be considered on the advice of University of Brighton immigration advisers and student visa compliance team. The refund will be subject to a £100 administration fee.

Paying the rest of your fees

Tuition fees are payable from the first day of your course and may be paid either online or by bank transfer, and you can choose to pay in up to six instalments if you are self-funding.

If you are not paying for your own fees, you must produce a letter confirming that your fees will be paid by your government, the British Council, an international organisation, your employer or other sponsor when you arrive at the university. We cannot complete your enrolment until we have seen this letter.

What is included in the fees

Mandatory requirements for your course are covered by the tuition fees. These include things such as health or criminal record checks, specialist materials and mandatory field trips.

Optional field trips, accommodation and course materials are not included in the tuition fees and you will need to pay for these yourself. Please contact the school that delivers your course about possible extra costs before you apply.
