In an interview, Sassa spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi said:

Sassa would like to apologise to its beneficiaries who normally receive their grants at pay points and community halls every month for the lack of services this month.

According to the Sapo, the majority of Sassa grants for the month of May have already been paid, therefore the arrangement only applies to those who receive the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant and those who use cash pay points.

SRD grant beneficiaries should bring their ID documents and cellphone, which were used when the beneficiary applied for their first grant because the One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to the beneficiaries’ cellphone to withdraw their funds, according to Sassa.

Letsatsi has also advised clients who have been affected to use alternate payment channels such as supermarkets (Boxer, Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, USave) to make withdrawals using their Gold Sassa/Sapo card.

“A beneficiary, therefore, receives the full value of the grant when using a supermarket, down to the last cent. The gold card can be used at all ATMs in South Africa. Where an ATM is used, the bank owning the ATM will levy a fee,” explained Sapo.

Both Sapo and Sassa employees will be available to assist beneficiaries at the mentioned payment channels.
