About SAS Institute

SAS Institute is a multinational American analytics software developer headquartered in Cary, North Carolina. SAS creates and sells a suite of analytics software (also known as SAS) that allows users to access, manage, analyze, and report on data to aid decision-making. The company is the world’s largest privately held software company, and the majority of the Fortune 500 use its software.

SAS Institute began in the late 1960s as a project at North Carolina State University to develop a statistical analysis system (hence the proper name, Statistical Analysis System) that agricultural departments at universities primarily used.

In 1976, it became an independent, private company led by current CEO James Goodnight and three other university project leaders. SAS increased its revenue from $10 million in 1980 to $1.1 billion by 2000. In 1998, a more significant proportion of these revenues were spent on R&D than at most other software companies; in 1997, this was more than double the industry average.
