Career
He joined the South African Police (SAP) as a Constable in August 1979 in Pietermaritzburg and in 1991 was promoted to the Officer Cadre.
This was part of the reforms and he served as Station Commander at the Vosloorus police station and as the Deputy Police Commissioner of Gauteng.
As Deputy Commissioner, Mdluli headed the investigation of fraud and corruption charges against advocate Gerrie Nel, who was then head of the elite Scorpions investigative unit in Gauteng.
After an interview with four of Jacob Zuma’s cabinet, Mdluli was appointed as Divisional Commission of Police’s Crime Intelligence Division effective from 1 July 2009. The panel was led by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
Sentence
On the 29th of September 2024, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
He was found guilty of kidnapping, common assault and assault with intent to do previous bodily harm. The case relates to the 1990 murder of Oupa Ramogibe who allegedly had an affair with Mdluli’s customary wife Tshidi Buthelezi.
