One of those changes included the monthly threshold which was R350, it was then amended to R624, aligning with the food poverty line and those changes were implemented by the department on 1 July 2024.

This then resulted in a two month delay, and during this period the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) had a backlog of grant appeals that it still had to sort out.

However, Sassa has made an announcement of migrating to a new system. In a statement, the government agency confirmed:

We are improving our online services platform to serve you better.

Sassa grant applicants whose applications were returned due to incomplete documents, will be allowed to upload their documents for further processing up until 14 October 2024.

Should the applicant not be able to submit on time, they will be required to resubmit their application on the new online platform, which will be live from 1 November 2024.

When it comes to grant applications that were not finalised due to applications failing Department of Home Affairs or bank validations, then individuals will have to be re-submitted on the new online platform as soon as it goes live.

According to Sassa, all clients (existing and new) will be required to re-register/register on this new platform.

Individuals that would like to apply as soonest, have been afforded the opportunity to receive assistance at their nearest Sassa local offices.

As of 29 August 2024, Sassa will be rendering their services from their new premises located at Mduduzi Msomi Road, P Section in KwaMashu, after a local office had been torched during the KwaZulu-Natal 2024 riots.
