The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is giving students who are registered but unfunded a second chance for a NSFAS bursary. Here’s how it works.

NSFAS opened up the period of 18 August until 3 September for students to apply for this special funding window. The financial aid scheme has said:

NSFAS encourages qualifying students who are registered in the 2023 academic cycle and are without any other form of a bursary to enquire with their Financial Aid Office whether they qualify to apply during this window.

The requirements for this bursary are as follows:

  • Household income threshold still applies which is R350 000 per annum and R600 000 per annum for students living with disabilities
  • You have to be a registered student at one of South Africa’s 26 Public Universities.
  • Students also need to not have any other bursary or financial aid in place.
  • NSFAS will need students to pass a minimum of 50% of their modules as well.
  • Must be a South African Citizen or a permanent resident
  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify on financial eligibility

Applications for this round are however not exactly the same as usual as students cannot directly apply through the NSFAS website.

Students who meet the requirements for this window have to do the following to apply:

  1. Contact their University Financial Aid Office to find out if they qualify and can apply
  2. If they do, your name will then be put on a list
  3. This list is then submitted to NSFAS
  4. Once they’ve received all your information, you will then be contacted
  5. You will now be given special access to apply online
  6. Register on the myNSFAS portal
  7. Complete your application

You will also need to have a valid email address and cellphone number, a copy of your ID, copy of students parent/s / Guardian or spouse ID and proof of income.

Head to the NSFAS website here for more information on NSFAS applications.
