Stewart was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in May 2000 and he undergoes surgery the same month. It had been earlier reported he grieved from a benign vocal cord nodule.

The result of the surgery threatened his vocal cord, and he had to start learning again. He had also been actively raising funds for the City of Hope Foundation charity to find a cure for cancer.

Coming back to the UK, he played for his LA Exiles team made up of English professionals plus minor celebrities, including Billy Duffy of The Cult, in a senior soccer league in Palos Verdes, California.
